The Homewreckers

Summary: Summer begins with Mary Kay Andrews in this delightful summer read about flipping houses and finding true love. Hattie Kavanaugh went to work helping clean up restored homes for Kavanaugh & Son Restorations at eighteen; married the boss's son at twenty; and was only twenty-five when her husband, Hank, was killed in a motorcycle accident. Broken hearted, but determined to continue the business of their dreams, she takes the life insurance money, buys a small house in a gentrifying neighborhood, flips it, then puts the money into her next project. But that house is a disaster and a money-loser, which rocks her confidence for years to come. Then, Hattie gets a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: star in a beach house renovation reality show called The Homewreckers, cast against a male lead who may be a love interest, or may be the ultimate antagonist. It's a question of who will flip, and who will flop, and will Hattie ever get her happily-ever-after. Filled with Mary Kay Andrews's trademark wit, warmth, junking trips, and house porn, The Homewreckers is a summer beach delight.

Narrator Kathleen McInerney exudes beach-read energy in this entertaining audiobook. Contractor Hattie Kavanaugh has never considered participating in reality television, but she's facing bankruptcy after a failed project. When Hattie's second chance comes via a high-concept home renovation show, the only things in her way are a shoestring budget, an obnoxious costar, and clues to a decades-old disappearance that have just landed in her lap. McInerney's narration is airy and sweet, enjoyable though sometimes at odds with the true-crime element of the story. Her interpretation of a Georgia accent is subtle, and she gives it a twist to fit the backgrounds of the various characters she is voicing. Listeners will be swept up in the complicated plot and enjoy the entire wild ride. N.M. © AudioFile 2022, Portland, Maine

Widowed at an early age, Hattie continues to work construction and cut becomes proficient in renovating and flipping homes. Loss on her latest project forces her to join The Homewreckers, a new reality show, to be able to buy the condemned Tybee Island beach house for her next undertaking. A Los Angeles film crew works with a Savannah carpentry crew and narrator McInerney easily distinguishes among the many varied characters, from the warm, sweet, Southern tones of Hattie and the curse-filled, vitriolic speech of the entitled former beach-house owners to LA producer Rebecca's strident, ignore-everyone-else voice and designer Trae Bartholomew's smarmy, disparaging commentary on the Savannah area. Familiar Southern phrases pop up occasionally, all expressively delivered. An angry former owner, a dumpster fire, a missing woman's wallet found in the house, and what might be a real romance combine in a stress-filled, profitable six weeks of restoration work. The audio's upbeat feeling is matched by the sprightly piano music introducing and ending this work. Summertime is enhanced by this audio. Copyright 2022 Booklist Reviews.

With her signature twist of mystery and romance, Andrews (The Santa Suit) tells the story of Hattie Kavanaugh, a young widow who went into business as a contractor with her father-in-law, Tug, in historic Savannah. After making the mistake of choosing a house that becomes more than she can handle, Hattie gets talked into working on a home improvement reality show to recoup her losses. Between contemplating a possible romance with her costar and other suitors, finding the body of her former teacher at the renovation site, and trying to identify and avoid the murderer herself, Hattie has a rough road to travel. Versatile voice actress Kathleen McInerney brings warmth and vivacity to her narration and creates individual voices for each of the book's characters. McInerney's depiction of Hattie is especially skillful, so that listeners will feel privy to all her thoughts and concerns. VERDICT Recommend to fans of light romance and mystery or anyone looking for a fun beach read.—Cheryl Youse
